"Later 1.9 dCi (Bosch CP3 common rail, Euro 4 and 5) in the Megane II/III, Scenic II/III, Laguna II and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Much better than the 2000-2005 engines: the connecting-rod bearing problem is gone and turbo faults were fixed by 2008. The weak point is the injectors - a leaking injector seal can damage the engine - plus EGR clogging. Timing belt."

Detection

Diesel smell, ticking or blow-by noise from the head, hard starting, rough idle, smoke

Details

Injection faults are the most reported problem of the 130 hp 1.9 dCi and affect every generation, often through a leaking injector seal. Left alone, a leak can lead to engine failure.

Greece Note

No Greek-specific data found.

● MODERATE

Turbocharger faults (to 2008)

N/A–N/A N/A–N/A
View details ▸
Detection

Loss of power, limp mode, whistling, boost fault codes

Details

Turbo trouble continued on the 130 hp engine until 2008 and was then corrected; many cases are a split hose, a seal or the pressure sensor rather than the turbo itself. The turbo does not tolerate low or old oil.

Greece Note

Late oil changes shorten turbo life. No Greek-specific data found.

● MODERATE

EGR valve clogging

N/A–N/A N/A–N/A
View details ▸
Detection

Loss of power, limp mode, engine warning light

Details

The EGR valve clogs with soot, mostly on cars used in town.

Greece Note

City driving and short trips speed up clogging. No Greek-specific data found.

● MODERATE

Timing belt (replace on schedule)

N/A–N/A N/A–N/A

Detection

Preventive only

Details

The camshaft is driven by a timing belt. Change it on schedule and check the accessory belt too: if the accessory belt breaks it can fall into the timing drive and force a major repair.
