DV6ATED4/DV6TED4 1.6 HDi 16v
PSA · 1.6L Diesel I4 (16v)
2004–2010
"First-generation 16-valve 1.6 HDi (also Ford 1.6 TDCi, Volvo D4164T, Mini One D). Carbon in the oil blocks the turbo feed pipe and pickup strainer and kills the turbo — even dealer-serviced engines have done it twice. Leaking injector seals start the chain. Buy only with proof of short oil intervals and a turbo done with new feed pipes."

Known Issues 3
DPF blockage — city driving
▸DPF warning, limp mode
Standard diesel DPF. City use without regular highway runs will clog DPF. Incomplete regenerations also dilute and degrade the oil that feeds the turbo.
Athens city: same warning as all PSA diesels. Monthly highway run recommended.
Injector copper-seal leak — soot into the oil ("black death")
▸Exhaust smell inside the cabin, chuffing or ticking from the top of the engine, black tar around the injector bases, soot in the oil
Injector clamp bolts lose preload and combustion gas leaks past the copper washer. The leak carbonises the injector in place (expensive to remove) and the soot ends up in the oil circuit that feeds the turbo. Fiches-auto records injection as the top complaint on every version; the 8-valve head was redesigned for better injector sealing.
Cheap if caught early — have the injector clamp bolts checked at every oil change.
Turbo failure from carbon-blocked oil feed and pickup strainer
▸Low oil pressure warning, whining or screaming turbo, blue smoke, loss of boost, metal debris in the sump strainer
Soot and fuel-contaminated oil carbonise in the turbo feed pipe and the sump pickup strainer; the bearing runs dry and seizes. A new turbo without new feed/return pipes, a new strainer and two oil flushes fails again. BTN Turbo reports a dealer-serviced engine with two failures in 110,000 miles; PSA later uprated the oil pump and redesigned the turbo installation on the 8-valve engine. Onset figures converted from 70,000 and 110,000 miles.
Short Athens trips with incomplete DPF regeneration degrade the oil fastest. Change oil every 10,000 km, not 20,000. Ask for the turbo invoice and check it lists feed pipes and strainer.
