Character
D5204T (D5204T2/T3/T4/T5/T6/T7)
"Volvo's 2.0 five-cylinder diesel, a short-stroke version of the 2.4 D5, sold as D3 and D4 (136-177 hp) in the C30, S40, V50, C70, V40, S60, V60, S80, V70 and XC60 from 2010 until the four-cylinder VEA took over in 2014-2015. Smooth and torquey. Watch the auxiliary-belt tensioner (a failed belt can take out the timing belt), the timing belt at 180,000 km or 10 years, and coolant loss: mechanics report cracked blocks and head gaskets on some engines."
VEP4 2.0 single-turbo (B4204T T3/T4/T5, B4154T)
"Volvo's own Drive-E four-cylinder with a single turbo (T3/T4/T5, also the 1.5 T2/T3). Smooth and economical. Engines built from late 2013 to early 2016 can burn oil through faulty piston rings - Volvo replaced pistons under a technical bulletin and a US class action followed. Later engines are fine; the cam drive is a long-life belt."
