H4M E-Tech (HR16 + 2 electric motors)
Renault · 1.6 E-Tech Hybrid / Plug-in I4
2020–present
"Renault's 1.6 E-Tech hybrid: the naturally aspirated Nissan-designed 1.6 four-cylinder (H4M/HR16) with two electric motors and a clutchless multimode dog-clutch gearbox, in the Clio V, Captur II, Arkana, Megane, Symbioz, Dacia Jogger and Duster and Mitsubishi ASX, as full hybrid (140-145 hp) or plug-in (158-160 hp). The petrol engine itself has a good record. The weak point is the hybrid gearbox: a seal on the e-motor shaft can leak oil, and Renault has run campaigns on about 157,000 cars built 2019-2024, up to a new gearbox. Ask for proof that all campaigns were done."

Hybrid gearbox oil leak into the electric motor (primary-shaft seal)
▸"Electric motor overheating" warning, loss of drive when pulling away, car refuses to start; fault codes 0A9098 or 16D861
The O-ring on the hollow primary shaft of the main electric motor can let gearbox oil into the motor. Renault opened a technical campaign on 21 May 2024 for about 157,600 cars in France built 26 August 2019 to 2 February 2024 (Clio 5, Captur 2, Megane 4, Arkana, Dacia Jogger), after an earlier check campaign on 155,825 cars. Depending on damage the seal is replaced and the motor cleaned, or the whole gearbox is replaced. Renault covers the work for cars under 7 years and 150,000 km. Gearbox faults are the most reported item in French owner reviews of the 1.6 E-Tech (48 of 233).
No Greek-specific data found.
Washer between electric motor and gearbox can break (car immobilised)
▸Hybrid system warnings, car will not move or start
In September 2023 Renault reprogrammed four computers on about 154,000 hybrids built April 2020 to April 2023 (campaign 0E2M) because an "Onduflex" washer between the electric motor and the gearbox could break and immobilise the car. Software updates for jerky shifts and warnings are common on early cars.
No Greek-specific data found.
12 V auxiliary battery going flat
▸Car will not wake up or start, multiple warnings after standing a few days
The 12 V service battery can go flat repeatedly, mostly on low-mileage cars; battery faults are the second most reported item in French owner reviews of the 1.6 E-Tech, many of them the 12 V battery. Some owners keep a jump booster.
No Greek-specific data found.
This report covers the combustion engine only. Battery and electric motor reliability are not included.
