L3-VE vs Skyactiv-X 2.0
Side-by-side reliability comparison
Specifications
Character
L3-VE
"Mazda's naturally aspirated 2.3 MZR (Mazda6 2.3 166 PS, also Mazda3, Mazda5, MPV, Tribute and Ford models). Chain-driven, port injection, no turbo - a much simpler engine than the 2.3 MPS turbo. Its best-known weakness is increased oil consumption, so check the level often. Valve clearances need periodic adjustment (no hydraulic lifters)."
Skyactiv-X 2.0
"Mazda's 2.0 petrol with spark-controlled compression ignition (SPCCI) and M Hybrid mild-hybrid system, in the Mazda3 and CX-30. Despite the complex technology, long-term tests by ADAC, auto motor und sport and AUTO BILD (100,000 km with teardown) found no engine faults beyond one replaced cylinder pressure sensor. Early 2019 cars had a software recall for a stall risk; make sure all ECU updates are done. Limited data beyond 100,000 km so far."
