Character
L3-VE
"Mazda's naturally aspirated 2.3 MZR (Mazda6 2.3 166 PS, also Mazda3, Mazda5, MPV, Tribute and Ford models). Chain-driven, port injection, no turbo - a much simpler engine than the 2.3 MPS turbo. Its best-known weakness is increased oil consumption, so check the level often. Valve clearances need periodic adjustment (no hydraulic lifters)."
Skyactiv-G 2.0 (PE-VPS/PE-VPR)
"Skyactiv-G 2.0 (PE-VPS): high-compression direct-injection 2.0 with a timing chain, used in the Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3, CX-30, CX-5 and MX-5 since 2012. Owners and the specialist press report no engine failure pattern; the only recurring note is intake and injector deposits, typical of direct injection and worse with long oil-change intervals or poor fuel."
