N52 vs N53: The Same BMW Six, 65 Points Apart

Here's a trap that catches used-BMW buyers cold. The N52 and N53 are both 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated straight-sixes from the same era, in the same body shells, making the same 272 hp. They look almost identical under the bonnet. Yet one is a 90/100 gem and the other is a 25/100 money pit — the widest gap between two sibling engines in our entire database.

The difference is one design decision, and it can cost you thousands.

Quick answer: Buy the N52 (90/100, BEST) — port-injected, robust, a genuine keeper. Avoid the N53 (25/100, AVOID) — its direct-injection piezo injectors fail, and replacement parts are now scarce and eye-wateringly expensive. On a 3-series or 5-series of this era, confirm which engine it has before you buy.

The gem

N52 — 90/100 (BEST)

The N52 (2004–2015) is old-school BMW done right: magnesium-aluminium block, conventional port injection, and a fault list that's all minor housekeeping:

Nothing here threatens the engine. Looked after, the N52 comfortably passes 300,000 km — it's one of the last great naturally-aspirated BMW sixes.

The trap

N53 — 25/100 (AVOID)

The N53 (2007–2011) looks like an N52 but switched to direct injection with piezoelectric injectors — and that's where it falls apart. It's the lowest-scoring petrol six we track:

The injectors fail in sets, and because supply has dried up, a full replacement can approach the value of the car. Rough running, misfires and limp mode are the classic symptoms. There's no cheap fix.

The verdict

The N52 is a buy-with-confidence classic. The N53 is one to actively avoid on the used market unless it's already had a full injector set fitted with proof. Because the two are so easily confused, do the homework: check the engine code on the build sheet or VIN, not just the "330i" badge — the same badge could hide either engine.
