"The third-generation 1.8 TSI/TFSI (2012-2020): 180 hp in the Audi A3 8V, Skoda Octavia III and Superb III, SEAT Leon III and VW Passat B8, 192 hp in the SEAT Ibiza Cupra and Polo GTI. Timing chain, port plus direct injection and an IHI turbo; it is not the oil-burning Gen 2 1.8 TSI of 2007-2012. The known weak point is the plastic water pump and thermostat housing, which leaks coolant (typically around 90,000 km) and was the subject of a US class-action settlement. Some engines use more oil than they should; check the level and the coolant reservoir before buying."

Low coolant warning, pink crust or drips under the front of the engine, sweet smell after driving, temperature gauge rising

Details

The plastic water pump and thermostat housing module leaks coolant, typically around 90,000 km (Autoscore, 400-800 EUR). Audi issued a revised repair procedure for all EA888 Gen 3 engines in 2019 (TSB 2052657/3): replace the pump only if it leaks from its weep hole, and always renew the seal. In the US, the Zhao v. Volkswagen class action settled claims that the thermoplastic pump can fail and overheat the engine, reimbursing one pump within 8 years or 80,000 miles. Do not keep driving with a falling coolant level.

Details

Dutch and Polish used-car guides report that the 1.8 TSI 180 hp in the Skoda Octavia III sometimes uses more oil than it should; one owner at about 250,000 km cured mild consumption by replacing the crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. This is much less common than on the Gen 2 1.8 TSI (see that engine), whose piston rings were redesigned for Gen 3. Cost not sourced.
