2ZZ-GE
Toyota · 1.8L VVTL-i I4
1999–2011
"Yamaha-designed 1.8 for the Corolla T-Sport, Celica and Lotus Elise: VVTL-i switches to a high-lift cam around 6,000 rpm and it revs past 8,000. Early engines wore the lift bolts so the high cam stopped engaging (no engine damage; revised bolt from late 2002). No hydraulic lifters - valve clearance is a shim job. Not the 1ZZ with more power: a different, more highly strung engine."

Known Issues 1
VVTL-i lift-bolt wear - high cam stops engaging (pre-2003 engines)
▸Engine pulls normally to about 6,000 rpm but the high-lift cam does not kick in; ticking from the valve cover
The bolts that carry the high-lift rocker arms wear on early 2ZZ-GE engines (Celica, Corolla T-Sport, Lotus). The engine is not damaged but loses its top-end power. Toyota introduced a redesigned bolt in late 2002 and issued a service bulletin for earlier engines; a reference guide suggests preventive replacement after about 50,000 km.
Rare cars in Greece; ask a Toyota specialist to confirm the revised bolts. No Greek-specific data found.
