M15A-FKS
"The non-hybrid 1.5 three-cylinder petrol in the Yaris (XP210) and Yaris Cross: no turbo, direct injection, chain-driven, 120-125 hp. Too new for much used-car data; German guides say little is known yet. The weak point named so far is the water-cooled EGR cooler, which can crack and let coolant into the cylinders. Watch the coolant level and look for white smoke."
M15A-FXE
"Toyota's 1.5 three-cylinder hybrid (Atkinson cycle, chain-driven) in the Yaris and Yaris Cross from 2020, the Mazda2 Hybrid, the Aygo X Hybrid and the Lexus LBX; 116-136 hp system output. Reviewers call it one of the most refined engines in its class and most reported faults are not in the engine itself. Known items: the water-cooled EGR cooler can leak coolant (white smoke, falling coolant level), and the small 12 V battery can go flat on short trips - Toyota fitted a larger battery from November 2024. Still too new for much high-mileage data."
