EA888 Gen 1/2 vs Gen 3: The €3,000 Oil Habit VW Finally Fixed

The EA888 is the 2.0-litre turbo four that powers half the Volkswagen Group — Golf GTI, A3, A4, Passat, Tiguan and more. It's also a perfect example of why, with VAG engines, the generation is everything. Buy the wrong EA888 and you inherit an engine that drinks oil by the litre and destroys its own timing chain. Buy the right one and you get one of the best hot hatchbacks' hearts on the used market.

Quick answer: Avoid the Gen 1/2 (35/100) — the pre-2012 cars have a design-level oil-consumption flaw and a timing-chain tensioner that can grenade the engine. The Gen 3 (80/100) from 2012 fixed both and is a confident BUY. The dividing line is roughly 2012.

The problem child

EA888 Gen 1/2 — 35/100 (AVOID)

Two critical faults define the 2006–2012 engine, and neither is cheap:

The oil consumption isn't neglect — it's the piston-ring design. Many owners top up a litre every 1,000 km and eventually face a piston/ring rebuild. Worse, the plastic chain tensioner can let the chain jump, and on this interference engine that means bent valves. Two critical faults on one block is why it sits near the bottom of our VAG rankings.

The redemption

EA888 Gen 3 — 80/100 (BUY)

The 2012 redesign was a clean-up of everything that made the early engine notorious. The oil-burning and tensioner grenades are gone; what's left is ordinary, bounded maintenance:

The verdict

A 45-point gap on the same engine name. The Gen 3 is one of the smartest used turbo-four buys in the VAG range; the Gen 1/2 is a cautionary tale you avoid unless it's been documented-fixed and priced accordingly.

At the dealer: confirm the build year (target 2012+), check for oil-consumption history and top-up habits, and get proof the timing-chain tensioner was updated on any earlier car. If in doubt, walk to a Gen 3.
