BMW F30 3 Series: Which Engine and Year to Choose

BMW F30 3 Series 320d 328i 335i 340i engine guide

The F30 3 Series: eight engines, wildly different reliability

The BMW F30 (2012–2019) is one of the most popular used cars in Europe. But not all F30s are created equal — the engine under the bonnet makes all the difference. EngineScope tracks 8 engines that powered the F30, with reliability scores ranging from 35/100 (AVOID) to 93/100 (BEST).

Choosing the right engine-year combination can save you thousands in repairs.

Every F30 engine ranked

Engine Models Score Verdict Key risk
B58 3.0T I6 340i (2015+) 93/100 BEST None significant
B48 2.0T I4 320i/328i LCI (2015+) 82/100 BUY Minor — oil filter housing gasket
B47 2.0d I4 318d/320d LCI (2015+) 80/100 BUY DPF on short trips
N55 3.0T I6 335i (2012–2015) 76/100 BUY Valve cover gasket, VANOS
B38 1.5T I3 318i (2015+) 72/100 BUY Not exciting, but reliable
N20 2.0T I4 320i/328i (2012–2015) 58/100 CAUTION Timing chain recall
N13 1.6T I4 316i (2012–2015) 55/100 CAUTION Prince engine timing chain
N47 2.0d I4 316d/318d/320d (2012–2014) 35/100 AVOID Catastrophic timing chain

The best choice: B58 340i (2015+) — 93/100

If budget allows, the B58-powered 340i is arguably the best engine BMW has ever made. Forged internals, overbuilt from factory, and proven to 300,000+ km. It's also a monster for tuning — remaps to 400+ hp on stock internals are common.

Why it scores 93: no major design flaws, strong construction, excellent long-term data.

Best value: B48 320i/330i LCI (2015+) — 82/100

The B48 is the best modern four-cylinder BMW engine. Smooth, efficient, and maps well to 260 hp. The LCI (facelift, late 2015+) F30 models use the B48 instead of the problematic N20.

Known issues: oil filter housing gasket leak (€300–€500 fix), occasional coolant loss. Nothing catastrophic.

The key rule: if buying a 320i or 328i, make sure it's a 2016 or later model with the B48. The pre-LCI N20 is a different story.

Best diesel: B47 320d LCI (2015+) — 80/100

The B47 fixed the N47's fatal flaw by moving the timing chain to the front of the engine. It's a proper torque monster (400 Nm) that sips fuel on the motorway.

Avoid if: you only do short city trips. The DPF will clog and cause expensive problems (€1,500–€2,500).

The diesel rule: B47 = good. N47 = walk away.

Solid but ageing: N55 335i (2012–2015) — 76/100

The N55 fixed most of the N54's reliability nightmares. It's a proven 3.0L turbo six with 200,000+ km track record. Known issues (valve cover gasket, VANOS solenoids, charge pipe) are well-documented and relatively cheap to fix.

Best for: enthusiasts who want a fast, tuneable six-cylinder without the B58 price tag.

Caution zone: N20 320i/328i (2012–2015) — 58/100

The N20 is a punchy 2.0 turbo, but it has a well-documented timing chain guide failure that led to a class-action lawsuit. Cars built between 2012–2015 are most affected.

If considering an N20: - Check if the timing chain has been replaced (updated part fixes the issue) - Budget €1,500–€2,500 for preventive replacement if not done - Post-fix, the N20 can run 200,000+ km reliably

Avoid: N47 diesel (any year) — 35/100

The N47 deserves its own article — read it here. The rear-mounted timing chain is a fatal design flaw. The chain stretches, the engine dies. Replacement costs €2,000–€4,000 and requires engine removal.

Early F30 diesels (2012–2014 318d/320d) use the N47. Always check the production date. A 2015 320d uses the B47 — completely different engine, completely different reliability.

The golden rule: LCI or nothing

The F30 received a Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) facelift in mid-2015, which brought the modular B-series engines:

Pre-LCI (2012–2015) LCI (2015–2019)
N20 (timing chain risk) B48 (reliable)
N13 (Prince engine) B38 (adequate)
N47 (catastrophic risk) B47 (fixed design)
N55 (solid) B58 (excellent)

The pattern is clear: LCI models are significantly more reliable across the board. If you're buying an F30 today, the 2016+ model year is the sweet spot — depreciation has hit, B-series engines are fitted, and parts availability is excellent.

Summary: what to buy

  1. Dream pick: 340i B58 (2016+) — best BMW engine ever, 93/100
  2. Best value petrol: 320i/330i B48 (2016+) — smooth, efficient, 82/100
  3. Best diesel: 320d B47 (2016+) — fixed N47 flaws, 80/100
  4. Budget option: 335i N55 (2012–2015) — proven, tuneable, 76/100
  5. Avoid: any pre-LCI diesel (N47) or pre-fix N20
